TV BOOST FOR WOMEN’S RACING – posted 8 March 2014

Women’s cycle speedway has been given a major boost after BBC Television screened an all-women’s training day for the BBC News Channel Sportsday programme last night.

The action, from the Sheffield track, featured GB women’s captain Vicky Brown (pictured above).  Introduced as cycle speedway’s poster girl, the national indoor champion gave a very accomplished interview.

"As cycling gets bigger and bigger, the smaller sports within cycling will grow," the photogenic Brown told viewers.  "I think this sport has got so much room to grow. And the only way is up for it" she enthusiastically added.

Unfortunately the show is not available on iPlayer but an abridged transcript can be viewed at www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/26479460?print=true

LEAGUE PLANS TAKING SHAPE – posted 12 January 2014

Recently appointed Women’s League manager Natalie Timms is
busily making plans for the 2014 season.  Earlier indications are that women’s racing will revert back to inter-regional matches next year.

Speaking to Spokesman about her proposals, Natalie said “The pairs were ok last season but proper team racing must be the way to go.  I know the Women’s League had its problems before with regions
pulling out of matches but if we can get some good, committed people running the sport in the regions, there is no reason why the league couldn’t be a big success.”

Although it’s early days, Natalie plans are shaping up for a four team inter-regional league using the traditional Combination formula of six riders plus two optional reserves racing 13 heats following by an optional individual event.

WORLD CHAMPION TO CONCENTRATE ON VELODROME – posted 30 November 2013

Could Lauren Davies be the new Victoria Pendleton?

That’s the intriguing question after the newly crowned cyce speedway women’s champion announced today that she will be concentrating on velodrome racing next season.  Writing on her website, Lauren said:

“Becoming the women’s World individual champion was the icing on the cake and feels immense. I now believe that I am changing to a fixed gear in the velodrome next year, in an attempt to put my passion into action and see where it takes me. I have fulfilled my aim within cycle speedway and want to go on to achieve as much as i can in the sport that I love” expalined Lauren.

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR WOMEN’S RACING– posted 29
November 2013

One of Australia’s leading club officials has praised women’s racing and predicts that it has a bright international future.

Speaking exclusively to Spokesman, Salisbury Cycle Speedway vice president Tammie Martin praised the women who took part in the recent World championships in Australia, reflects on the events of the past month and shares her hopes that women’s international racing will develop further in the years to come.

“As our tourists depart, and our lives return to normal, there is time to reflect” said Tammie.

“Twelve months of training and preparing, then with the blink of an eye it’s over. It was possibly one of the greatest things to happen for the future of women’s racing in cycle speedway, and one we will remember forever. Australia vs GB test matches, the Federation Cup and women’s World individuals. For all the women involved, they were an absolutecredit to themselves and proved beyond a doubt that women’s racing can be just ascompetitive as any” said Tammie confidently.

“At the beginning there were two teams, completely divided and each for their own. But as the days went by, friendships formed. Some of the women combined to form the ICSF team to race in the Federation Cup. Side by side and together they all made history. The Australian women are super keen to take some credit back and fundraising has already begun to send them to the UK in 2015.

“Our hope for future women’s racing is to have more teams involved. Sandra Tamborska, representing Poland, proved without doubt Polish standards are high after competing in the ICSF team for the Federation Cup, immediately following that up riding with the Polish juniors, winning the Junior Federation Cup and putting up an amazing effort in the women’s World individuals. Wouldn't it be great if the Polish women have a team for the 2015 Worlds” suggested Tammie.

“Throughout the tour we have seen plenty of thrills, spills and hard fought battles between the women. Hopefully this means women’s racing takes a forward direction, encourages more countries to become involved and the women can take on a bigger involvement in future tours.

“I think women’s racing has certainly earned its place on the international circuit. Our family has been around for four Australian tours now andIt has been an amazing experience, especially having a daughter (Carly Martin) involved in this tour. We look forward to the 2015 Tour in the UK.

“Might I add a special mention to Ian Brown and Stuart Raven.  Their kindness and friendship was exceptional and their hopes for future women’s racing reflect very much on our own. And to all the international guests that attended meetings at the Salisbury Cycle Speedway, thankyou for your patronage and we look forward to seeing you again” said Tammie.

WOMEN’S COMMITMENT MUST BE APPLAUDED – posted 14 September 2013

You just have to applaud women’s racing and the commitment shown by some female riders.

Take, for example, Christine Amos-Adams.  The popular Newcastle Nomad (pictured) who clearly enjoys her cycle speedway, left her home in the North-East at 5am this morning to travel the 287 miles to Norfolk for this afternoon’s Women’s League match.  Then after the match, she made her way to Lancashire for tomorrow’s Northern League match with Bury before returning home to Northumbria on Sunday evening – a round journey of some 650 miles.

If that’s not bad enough, spare a thought for the Exeter ladies who endured a round trip, also of 650 miles today.  Then, next weekend, they go to Hull for the final leg of the Club championship, another 600 plus mile trip.

Who say the women are not committed.
