HALLAMSHIRE GO-RIDE FINAL ROUND posted 27 November 2013
Just as the World championships were coming to a close in Australia, the Sheffield club was setting up for the final round of the Hallamshire Go Ride League. The venue was the English Institute of Sport (EIS) indoor circuit, where it all began for the GB squad back at Februarys first training camp.
With the hall booked for three hours, the racing was split into speedway, using the sprint area, with kierans, devils, Australian pursuits and team pursuits utilising the 200 metre running track. Keeping everyone busy and blowing away the cobwebs of four weeks inactivity.
Aiden Owen returned to action and showed the some great form, dropping his only points when demoted two places for encroaching on the inner markers in his fourth race. The grippy indoor surface, which permits outdoor tyres, was producing some unusual results and plenty of passing. Ed Morton had a brilliant win over his brother Niall in heat four. Rob Mawhood came from last to first in both heats six and ten as he showed some vintage form.
Riders were finding grid four to be more of an advantage than a hindrance, as Ellie Sullivan showed in heat 12 as she cut back on turn one and then sped past Matt Parrott and Luke Morton. The only crash of the day came when Mick Knowles (the only rider on Maxxi tyres) slid off on the exit of the last corner in heat 16 as he tried to pass Luke Morton.
The Grand Prix finals saw Adrian Brownell hold John Turney and Paul Fisher at bay for the full four laps, with less than two bikes lengths between the three for the duration. Knowles then won the C final with another perfect cut back from grid four, to get the better of Luke Morton, Bunting and Parrott.
The B final provided the race of the day as Ed Morton and Sullivan got the better of a slow starting Mawhood (who missed his start from grid one). Mawhood first got past Morton, but then found that Sullivan was wise to the drop pass. It required an all or nothing pass round the outside on the very last corner for Mawhood to come through for the win that would then tie him for third place in the overall standings.
The under 10s/13s and womens combined to provide a 14 rider field. Unusually no rider stood head and shoulders above the rest. Tom Whitwam, over from Manchester to gain some practice ahead of a tilt at the British championships, led his first race before being past by Sam Turney. That would be Whitwams only defeat as he
learned from his loss of concentration to then go on and win his next four races, being the only rider to defeat Morgan Turner.
Sam Haines has been improving at the tail end of the season and was relishing the indoor surface. He gave Whitwam a scare in heat nine and then lowered the colours of Sam Turney in heat 13. Tom Scott, Dan Rushton and James Hawkins were the other race winners in this grouping. Haines came good again to win the under-13
A final and looks a good prospect for the Rockets Northern League Two team for 2014.
Whitwam took first place in the under-10 final, first passing Turney and then holding his challenges at bay. Turney though has the satisfaction of taking the overall under-10 title. The womens final belonged to the Unwin family, with Sullivan competing in the main open event, and Katy produced another good win to get the
better of Alice (sister) and Lisa (mum).
Jack Brownell dominated the qualifiers for the under-8s recording a full 16 point maximum. However he had to work hard for his two victories over Louis Jacobs. It was Jacobs who was showing a distinct liking for the indoor racing, and when it came to the A final he produced a beautiful pass to hit the front. Once there he pulled away as he leaned the bike more on the corners, generating more speed
to gain a five bike length victory.
Logan Perkins and Charlie Cottam both scored good wins in the qualifying races, but Oliver Sibbald (who revels on the outdoor track) had to be satisfied with his only win coming in the B final.
Sheffield have booked the venue again for Saturday 21st December (1pm-4pm) and 11th January (1pm-3pm). Anyone interested in
coming along to join the fun should either book online on the BC site (for the 21st only) or contact Rob Mawhood on 07790 325921. Both dates will probably run on the same format utilising both the athletics track infield and the 200 metre running track.
